The possibilities offered to further strengthen Cyprus-Kazakhstan cooperation and at the parliamentary level were noted by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, DISY MP, Averof Neophytou, during the meeting of the Committee with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Roman Vassilenko, on Thursday.
In an extraordinary session, the Committee, which was attended by the Chairman, Averof Neophytou and the MP of DIKO, Chrysis Pantelidis, met the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, who was accompanied by the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Cyprus based in Tel Aviv, Satybaldy Burshakov and Consul, Daniyar Baibekov.
According to a statement from the Parliament, Mr. Neofytou noted the very good relations that have developed between Cyprus and Kazakhstan, after their diplomatic relations were established 31 years ago, and noted the possibilities offered for further strengthening cooperation at the parliamentary level. He also pointed out the commitment of Cyprus to the efforts to restart the talks to solve the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, as described in the relevant UN resolutions. At the same time, he expressed his appreciation for the firm attitude of the Kazakh authorities regarding the Cyprus issue.
For his part, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan reaffirmed his country's principled positions in efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations, underlining the adherence to respect for the territorial integrity of states and the principle of "one country- one voice". Mr. Vassilenko also referred to the current developments in Kazakhstan and the efforts being made to further defend the democratic processes and fight against corruption, while emphasizing the auspicious prospects and opportunities for economic development and cooperation of Kazakhstan with all the countries of the wider region.
During the meeting, the common will to strengthen relations and cooperation between Cyprus and Kazakhstan was underlined, especially in the areas of common interest, such as those of investment, energy, green development and transport. The possibilities offered for strengthening cooperation through the participation of the two countries in international and regional organizations were also highlighted. It was underlined that within the framework of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU Member States and the Republic of Kazakhstan, the strategic partnership between the two parties in the field of rare raw materials and green energy is promoted.
