The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, will focus on six axes in his today's speech before the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations, most of which will concern the Cyprus issue and the efforts to restart the negotiations from where they left off with a clear reference to solution base.
This is the first speech of President Christodoulidis at this high-level political event, in which leaders from all over the world participate, after his election to the highest office of the Republic.
Message to Erdogan
As KYPE is informed, in his 12-page speech President Christodoulidis will give clear answers to the positions of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his speech on Tuesday before the General Assembly.
Addressing the Turkish President, he will send the message that due to the geography that cannot be changed, Cyprus and Turkey will always be neighbors and that the solution of the Cypriot issue can strengthen and upgrade the region. He will also call on him to resume the talks from where they were interrupted, repeating that the resolution of the Cyprus issue can lead to a mutually beneficial state of affairs.
Appointment of Envoy
In relation to the appointment of a UN envoy, President Christodoulidis will highlight the importance of such a move as was also underlined by the UN Security Council in its recent unanimous statement on the occasion of the incidents in Pyla but also based on the positions conveyed to him by the Presidents of the three EU institutions during the talks he had with them on September 18 and 19 in New York.
In this regard, he will point out that the appointment of the Secretary General's envoy will also be an important step to activate the EU in the next period, which is an important dimension in terms of the efforts made to restart the negotiations.
The first President belonging to the post-war generation
Besides, President Christodoulidis will highlight the fact that he is the first President of the Republic of Cyprus who belongs to the post-war generation, i.e. the one after 1974. The importance of this report is not only of symbolic value, but primarily essential, since it is about the generation that he was called to grow up in a semi-occupied homeland, which did not experience the invasion and not even in a free Cyprus and now he is called to work to reunite it.
Message to the new generation of E/k and T/k
Also, through the citation of personal reports, President Christodoulidis will remind and highlight the peaceful coexistence of Greece and Turkey in the past. At the same time, he will also send a message to the new generation of Greece and Turkey for the creation of such conditions through the resolution of the Cyprus issue.
Messages from T/m
He will also refer to the many messages he received from T/k after the interview he recently gave to a T/k journalist. These people convey to him the desire for a solution to the Cyprus problem, support his commitment to the agreed solution framework but also the undertaking of initiatives and recognize the effort to cultivate a positive climate by President Christodoulidis
Historical mission and role of the UN
The President of the Republic will also refer to the historic mission and role of the UN, underlining that the invasion of Ukraine is not the first since World War II and that the trials that Cyprus has been going through for 49 years as a result of the invasion and occupation is a key issue that touches upon the principles of the UN Charter.
The speech of the President of the Republic is expected to take place at 4.30 pm Cyprus time (9.30 am local time) and will last approximately 15 minutes.
Moreover, later today and specifically at 11 pm Cyprus time (4 pm local time) President Christodoulidis will meet, in the framework of the coordination between Nicosia and Athens, with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who earlier and specifically at 6 pm Cyprus time (11 am local time) will have a meeting with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
