The prospects opening up in bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt, as well as issues related to regional developments, were discussed on Monday in Cairo by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
According to an announcement from the Presidency, the President of the Republic arrived in Cairo this morning to attend, together with his Egyptian counterpart, the signing ceremony of an Agreement, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Cyprus, Egypt, as well as the companies operating in the Cypriot EEZ.
Immediately upon his arrival in Cairo, President Christodoulides went to the Al-Manara Convention Center, where the EGYPES 2025 exhibition is taking place, and was welcomed by President Sisi. The two Presidents then held a bilateral meeting.
During their meeting, the two Presidents underlined the great importance of the Agreement and the Memorandum of Understanding for the energy cooperation between the two countries. They also pointed out that through them, the energy cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt is being put on a track for substantial implementation.
During the meeting, which took place with the participation of delegations from the two countries, the next energy goals and milestones were discussed and the importance of further developing energy cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Egypt was underlined, both at the bilateral and regional levels, since it constitutes a model of cooperation and the promotion of peace, stability and development in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Regional and international developments, EU-Egypt relations, as well as bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt, were also discussed in the context of the results of the 2nd Intergovernmental Summit between the two countries, as well as the 10th Trilateral Summit with Greece.
In addition to the Energy sector, the cooperation between the two countries in various sectors was further discussed, such as Tourism, Trade, Investments, as well as the issue concerning the seasonal employment of Egyptians in Cyprus.
Finally, President Christodoulides informed President Sisi about the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the efforts being made to resume negotiations from the point where they have been interrupted, and in particular about the preparatory work in view of the expanded meeting to be convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The Cypriot delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs Konstantinos Kompos, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry George Papanastasiou, the Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the Ambassador of the Republic to Cairo Poly Ioannou, the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President Doros Venezis, the Director of the Hydrocarbons Service Dr. Stelios Nikolaidis and officials.
