An intense confrontation broke out in the Plenary during the debate on the budget when the AKEL and ELAM amendment concerning the dismissal of trade unionists from the board of the English School was put to a vote.

AKEL MP, Giorgos Loukaidis, listening to the laughter and reactions of his colleagues, hastened to clarify that "the amendments were submitted separately and we cannot control which parties will support them. Obviously we have different starting points."

The explanation provoked the strong reaction of Nikos Tornaritis, who noted that it is a procedural matter and will not be extended "to AKEL-ELAM cooperation". Annoyed, Giorgos Loukaidis replied that "what Tornaritis is doing is disgusting, it is unacceptable, he has taken away my speech while I was speaking in order to lie. Shame on you, sit down."

Nicolas Papadopoulos and Andreas Themistokleous then intervened.
