The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, is traveling to Brussels today, who will participate in the European Council meeting tomorrow and Friday.
During his intervention, President Christodoulidis is expected to highlight the need for more active and meaningful EU involvement in the region, especially to defuse the crisis in the Middle East, and will emphasize the importance of a structured and coordinated action and policy from the EU side.
Furthermore, Nikos Christodoulidis will highlight the imperative need to support important regional partners such as Egypt and Jordan.
According to the Government Representative, the PtD will once again express before the European Council the strong concern regarding the situation and developments in the Middle East, as they are taking shape, the wider effects in the region and especially in the EU, but also the negative consequences which may lead to a possible escalation of tension in the region.
It is noted that the agenda of the European Council includes, among others, the Russian attack on Ukraine, immigration, foreign affairs with developments in the Middle East at the center, the debate on the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework and a debate on the economy . The session will be preceded by the established preparatory session of the European People's Party, in which the President of the Republic will participate.
As far as the Cyprus issue is concerned, President Christodoulidis will reiterate the unwavering commitment of the Republic of Cyprus to international law and to a solution based on the two states, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly.
