Approximately 6.500 people will work to conduct the upcoming parliamentary elections, Deputy General Superintendent of Elections, Menelaos Vassiliou, told CNA on Tuesday, adding that the total cost of conducting the elections will reach 6 million euros.
Specifically, according to Mr. Vassiliou, approximately 5.300 civil servants and 1.200 police officers will be working to conduct the upcoming parliamentary elections. He said that exact numbers will be given next week during the official press conference to be held by the General Superintendent of Elections.
Regarding the remuneration of those working at polling stations, he said that the amount of 617 euros is planned for presiding officers and 316 euros for assistants, while the total cost for the elections will amount to approximately 6 million euros.
Asked whether those who work during the elections include the unemployed, the Assistant General Superintendent of Elections said that all those who have declared themselves unemployed and are registered with the Department of Labor will be utilized in their entirety. "Priority is always given to the unemployed and we have also secured approval from the Ministry of Labor to give the net amount and not make any deductions," he noted.
Specifically, according to Mr. Vasiliou, there were 16.103 declarations for work in the elections, of which 9.196 were from public employees, 6.614 from entities outside the state payroll, while 293 were declarations from unemployed graduates, which, as he reiterated, will be utilized in their entirety.
Regarding the number of polling stations, he said that during the parliamentary elections, 1.204 polling stations will operate, of which 13 will be in four locations abroad, while another 13 polling stations will operate for the election of the Representative of the Maronite Religious Group.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the total number of registered voters is 568.587, including 859 Turkish Cypriots, holders of an identity card of the Republic of Cyprus, with an address in the free areas, while 595 enclaved voters (335 from the Kyrenia Electoral District and 260 from the Famagusta Electoral District) are also entitled to vote, who are not included in the above numbers.
Approximately 600 voters will be allocated to vote at each polling station, while, depending on the geographical distribution of voters, a slight increase in this number may be required in some cases. The polling stations will be staffed by 1 presiding officer and 2 to 4 assistant officers, depending on the number of voters allocated to them.
