The Deputy Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Interior presented a proposal on Tuesday to the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, so that a permit can be granted to recreation centers only upon their application for a fire safety inspection, before the relevant certificate is issued.
As the Chairman of the Committee, DISY MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, said in his statements after the conclusion of the meeting, a number of recreation center premises in Cyprus "do not ensure, do not obtain or are not able to obtain fire safety certificates and their need to obtain an operating permit is not feasible."
He pointed out that the management by local authorities and other services "was the phenomenon of ostrichism, (letting them) operate but not taking responsibility."
Mr. Hatzigiannis reported that during the discussion of the issue in the Committee, a proposal was made by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Interior and the services involved, so that, given the application that the owner must submit for a fire safety inspection, within a specific timeframe it can operate, until the services respond to the managers.
The Chairman of the Committee described the proposal as a “positive development.” He added that “we called on the Ministry of Interior, before sending the circular, to consult it further so that it is implementable and not theoretical, without practical application.”
As Mr. Hadjigiannis said, the spirit of the discussion is “how to solve the problem and have everyone participate.”
