The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar are having their first meeting after the informal expanded meeting in Geneva today, which is scheduled for 9.00:XNUMX in the morning.
The meeting will take place at the residence of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, in the United Nations-controlled area of Nicosia airport.
In his statements yesterday, President Christodoulides stated that his sole goal for the meeting is to achieve results, either confidence-building measures or other results, that serve the resolution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework, principles and values of the European Union.
When asked if there is a specific agenda for the meeting with Mr. Tatar, President Christodoulides said that the parties have undertaken certain obligations towards the United Nations Secretariat, recalling that the results of the informal expanded meeting in Geneva included the discussion of advancing some confidence-building measures.
During the meeting, he said, "possible confidence-building measures will certainly be discussed in the areas that were agreed upon and that we made a commitment to the Secretary-General, but at the same time, the big goal is at the end of July, the next meeting, which we hope, we will do, will lead to the resumption of talks, always on the basis of the agreed framework. So even confidence-building measures that will be discussed tomorrow [S.S. today, Wednesday], these should exclusively serve this goal, of the resumption of talks on the basis of the agreed framework," he noted.
Furthermore, regarding the appointment of a personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, the President said that this is at the stage of the bureaucratic process and that there may be announcements this week.
