The fact that the role of the Republic of Cyprus is being upgraded, after its election to the Human Rights Council and the hosting of MED9, strengthens both our effort and our argumentation in relation to the need to find a functional and sustainable solution for a member state of the European Union Union that will continue to have a stronger role in the region, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, on Thursday morning.
Coming to the World Congress of WISTA International, in Limassol, where he would address a greeting, the President expressed his great satisfaction and pride for the first election of the Republic of Cyprus to the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. "A development, which not only strengthens the regional and international footprint of our country, but also shows how the international community approaches us in a crucial issue for everyone, the issue of human rights," he said.
He added that our election comes at a time when our role in the region, through the mission of humanitarian aid, through the evacuation of citizens from third countries, is recognized by the international community, noting that it is no coincidence that the Republic of Cyprus was elected second in votes received from member states.
"It is in this context that I will welcome tonight to Cyprus the President of the European Commission and tomorrow the King of Jordan and the leaders of the 9 Mediterranean member states of the European Union to discuss, of course, the developments in the region and how the The European Union can undertake specific initiatives to defuse the crisis, but also to strengthen humanitarian aid in the region. But considering that we are also in a period when the new cycle of the European Union will begin, the issues that concern the Mediterranean, the issues that concern the Mediterranean states of the European Union should be placed high on the Commission's priorities, and I consider the decision of the European Union to be positive President to recommend a special portfolio for the Mediterranean", he said.
President Christodoulidis noted that all this comes at a time when our efforts for the need to restart the talks have been recognized. He noted that he is going to New York next week to meet the Turkish Cypriot leader, in the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations. "All of our efforts at the regional, European, and international level reinforce exactly this effort, which is our number one priority for ending the occupation and reuniting our homeland," he said.
Asked if he hoped that there would be positive developments from the tripartite, he said that "I hope so, speaking with the intentions with which I will attend this particular informal dinner. I am going to New York precisely so that there will be a positive result. I am not interested in the blame game, accusations, complaints and so on. The homeland is ours under occupation and we have a responsibility to do everything possible and I am going to New York precisely through this reasoning".
