The Republic of Cyprus, as the closest European state to the region and as the representative of the European Union in it, will continue to play a bridging role of peace, security and stability, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, re-assured, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Unit Hemodialysis at Paphos General Hospital, which took place in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
President Christodoulidis emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus is making every effort to fulfill its mission as a creative and beneficial partner and as part, always, of the effort to find solutions.
Referring to the agenda of the MED9 Summit that begins at noon in Paphos, he said that the presence of the King of Jordan, a country with a particularly important role as a pillar of stability and peace in the region, is important.
"The war in the Middle East and the need to deal with the humanitarian crisis that is worsening day by day, migration pressures, energy, competitiveness, climate change, are some of the topics on the agenda of the discussions," he said.
The President of the Republic expressed the certainty that the session will be productive and will contribute effectively towards the search for ways out and creative and substantial solutions.
"Just a few tens of kilometers from where we are, a war is raging. We all have a responsibility to take leadership to put an end to the human drama and prevent further escalation," he stressed.
In his speech he referred to the transfer of humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza through the international initiative "Amalthia" which the President of the Commission supported from the first moment as well as to the safe accommodation and repatriation of civilians who are removed from the war zone, which are our main priorities, as he noted.
"Our neighboring peoples and states can rely on the solidarity of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union. Just like us as the Republic of Cyprus, we are investing in the support of our European partners, who I am sure recognize the enormous, perhaps even asymmetric, challenges that a front-line member state has to face. A state which, at the same time, is trying to get rid of the illegal presence of Turkish occupying forces for fifty years", he said.
