The President of the Republic, once again, reiterated his readiness, even today or tomorrow, to hold the second meeting with Mr. Tatar, said today the Government Spokesperson, Mr. Konstantinos Letymbiotis, referring to the content of the meeting between the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, with the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Rosemary di Carlo.
In statements to journalists at the Presidential Palace, following the meeting between the President of the Republic and the UN Deputy Secretary-General, the Spokesperson said that this meeting "is taking place, of course, within the framework of the necessary preparatory work, in view of the convening of the multilateral conference.
Once again, we welcome the dedication and commitment of the UN Secretary-General himself to efforts to resume negotiations.
The President of the Republic exchanged views with Ms. Carlo, in a very productive discussion that lasted over an hour, on how we should proceed in the period preceding the multilateral conference, precisely in order to contribute in the greatest possible way to achieving a positive outcome.
We approach this multilateral meeting as an opportunity to serve as a springboard for resuming negotiations from where they have always been interrupted within the agreed framework. In this context, President Christodoulides submitted specific proposals and suggestions to Ms. Carlo, regarding how this positive outcome can be ensured during the multilateral conference in Geneva.
He reiterated, of course, our readiness, once again, to resume negotiations and touched upon, noted, and underlined the importance in the process of prioritizing the discussion and drafting of the structure, so that it can contribute positively to a positive outcome.
The President of the Republic, once again, reiterated to Ms. di Carlo his readiness, even today or tomorrow if Ms. di Carlo's schedule allows, to hold the second meeting with Mr. Tatar in the context of the discussion on the opening of new crossing points or the points that the President of the Republic included in the package of eight proposals that he submitted to Mr. Tatar during their last meeting.
In addition, Ms. Carlo informed the President of the Republic that she will have meetings in the coming days in both Athens and Ankara and that they will be in touch after the completion of these contacts.
Asked whether the President's proposals concern substance or procedure, the Spokesperson said that "substance and procedure are linked. Further, as to the content of these proposals, at this stage it is not appropriate to disclose anything."
She added that Ms. Di Carlo approached the President of the Republic's suggestions with the positive sign that characterizes them "since they demonstrate once again our sincere political will and the constructive way in which we approach both the multilateral meeting itself, but also the very important period that will precede it, namely the preparatory work that will equally contribute to the positive outcome that we want to have towards lifting the impasse."
Asked about the date of the multilateral meeting, the Spokesperson said that "the UN has focused on specific dates within March. The specific announcements, however, will be made by the UN."
