"We are under no circumstances discussing a two-state solution," said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, to the German News Agency (DPA).
The DPA notes that a few days before the 50th anniversary of "the partition of Cyprus", despite many mediation efforts, the reunification of the island is not visible on the horizon, as recently both the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Ersin Tatar, and and the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, have repeatedly advocated a two-sovereign state solution, which is rejected not only by Nicosia, but also by Berlin, the E.U. and the UN.
"I am grateful for Germany's assistance", stressed President Christodoulidis, referring to the visit of the German President, Steinmeier, to Cyprus last February, while adding that the experience of German reunification is valuable for Cyprus, as is Berlin's assistance in shaping a positive Euro-Turkish agenda is very important to achieve progress towards reunification.
