The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, informed the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, about the developments in the Cyprus issue, during the meeting they had at the Presidential Palace, according to an announcement by the Presidency in which it is noted that in this context, the important role of the United Kingdom as a guarantor was underlined country and shaper and drafter of resolutions (penholder) within the United Nations Security Council.
"The visit of the British Prime Minister is considered historic, since it is the first visit by a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Cyprus after 53 years, which takes place in the context of the ever-expanding relations between the two countries," it states.
During today's consultations between the Governments of the two countries, led by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, it is added, "bilateral relations were discussed, with an emphasis on the upcoming second Strategic Dialogue between the two countries, cooperation in the fields of security and defence, education and culture, the economy, investment and trade relations, clean energy and migration'.
"Satisfaction was expressed on both sides for the level of bilateral cooperation, as well as the common will of the two leaders to further strengthen it through coordinated, joint actions", it is noted.
The announcement of the Presidency continues by stating that "regional issues were also discussed at length, especially the developments in Syria and the possible effects on the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East".
"In this context, the humanitarian role played by the Republic of Cyprus in the region was emphasized, both through the provision of humanitarian aid and in matters of removing citizens from war zones", it is noted.
It is also reported that one of the main topics of discussion was the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the efforts made by the President of the Republic to restart talks with the aim of solving the Cyprus problem.
"President Christodoulidis informed about the developments after his meeting with the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish Cypriot leader in New York and about the upcoming enlarged meeting that will be convened. In this context, the important role of the United Kingdom as a guarantor country and shaper and drafter of resolutions (penholder) within the United Nations Security Council was underlined", he concludes.
