The developments in the region and the electrical interconnection were among the topics that occupied the tripartite meeting of Cyprus - Greece - France, held on the evening of September 24, in New York, in which the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulidis, the President of France Emmanuel Emmanuel Macron and the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In statements after the meeting, President Christodoulidis stated that he will also respond to the Turkish President's intervention during the General Assembly's address.

"As expected, the disturbing developments in the region are the topic that dominates all the discussions here in New York and within this context in the joint meeting we had with the French President and the Greek Prime Minister, taking into account the special interest of France about the developments in the region, we discussed, there was an exchange of views on how this situation can be dealt with, a situation that carries very serious risks," said President Christodoulidis.

He stated that within this context they agreed that during the Meeting of the nine Mediterranean EU Member States (MED9) that will take place in Paphos, the developments in the region will be the dominant theme, with the PtD welcoming in this context and the presence in MED9 of the King of Jordan. "You realize the important role that Jordan plays, as a pillar country of stability in the region," he said.

He mentioned that in their discussions during the tripartite, the subject of discussion was the electrical interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, taking into account the strong French interest in French participation in the implementation of this strategically important project.

Taking into account the discussions, during his address to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, the President said that he would refer "specifically to the developments in the region, to the role played by the Republic of Cyprus, a role that the Secretary General himself has welcomed of the UN, but also many foreign leaders, and within this context I will also respond to today's [Tuesday] intervention by the Turkish President, both for regional matters, but also for the developments in the Cyprus issue and the prospect of resuming negotiations".

According to his schedule, the President of the Republic will address the Plenary Session of the UN General Assembly at 1100 (New York time), and then he will speak before the Security Council, on the topic of the promotion of peace and respect for the UN Charter .

He is also expected to participate in a lunch with a delegation of the Leadership of the Hellenic-American Council and to have a meeting with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohamed Sia Al Sudani. He is also expected to attend a reception with his wife hosted by US President Joe Biden and his wife.

Government sources report that the tripartite Greece-Cyprus-France meeting discussed international and regional developments with an emphasis on the situation in Gaza and the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection.

"The meeting of MED9 hosted by Cyprus on October 11 in Paphos acquires particular importance, while the participation of the King of Jordan adds even more weight," the same sources state.

Regarding the Great Sea Interconnector, the President of the Republic and the Greek Prime Minister informed the French side as an interested party.

According to the same sources, "France is particularly interested in the project, both because of the involvement of a company with French interests and because of the project's prospects."

With reference to the speech of the PtD at the General Assembly of the United Nations, government sources state that "the entire General Assembly is largely concerned with the developments in our region" and point out that the "President of the Republic will place special emphasis on the developments in the region and then he will connect them with the Cyprus issue".
