It is important for Turkey to abandon the rhetoric of a two-state solution, said the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Dimitriou, during her meeting with the Co-President of the European Party of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, in the presence of the President of the Democratic Party (DIPA), Marios Karoyan.
As stated in a statement by the Parliament, during the meeting, the President of the Parliament referred to the serious challenges facing the European Union (EU), mainly the threat to its security, in the midst of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the escalation of violence in the Middle East. Mrs. Dimitriou underlined that Cyprus, always on the basis of principles, will continue to support Ukraine and will condemn any terrorist attack. Cyprus, he noted, supports a two-state solution in the Middle East, which can only be achieved through diplomacy.
The President of the Parliament pointed out, at the same time, the difficulties faced by the Republic of Cyprus, as the EU member state that accepts the largest number of asylum seekers in proportion to the population, most of whom arrive from the occupied territories, through the cease-fire line in the areas under the control of the Cyprus Government. In this regard, Mrs. Dimitriou underlined the importance of revising the existing European asylum and immigration system, on the basis of equality and solidarity.
Referring to the current situation with regard to the Cyprus problem, the Speaker of the House informed Mr. Kyuchyuk of the efforts being made for the appointment by the UN Secretary General of an envoy to facilitate the resumption of direct negotiations, with the aim of reaching a solution, on the basis of the agreed framework and relevant United Nations resolutions. To this end, Mrs. Dimitriou emphasized, it is important for Turkey to abandon its rhetoric for a "two-state" solution.
