Our goal is none other than for Cyprus to be a pillar of security and stability in a wider unstable region, said the President of the House of Representatives Annita Dimitriou, in her speech at the opening of the 5th Cyprus Forum on Thursday in Nicosia.
According to Mrs. Dimitriou, as we are going through a period of questioning of democratic values and institutions, we should respond by further strengthening the democratic legislative and institutional framework itself in order to be able to serve the principles of law, the rules of law, the rule of law, ourselves.
"The only solution is more commitment to what we believe and collaborations, only through collaborations and unity can we face such important crises that we have in front of us," he noted.
As the House of Representatives we have proven that we systematically support every effort to address and regulate institutional and social issues, he continued, adding then that we need bold and substantial initiatives and legislative reforms, such as local government reform, to address chronic weaknesses in the state sector, to strengthen the rule of law and to come into agreement with the suggestions of the European institutions.
"In a democracy there are never dead ends, it is up to us to see how, and in cooperation with the executive branch, we make those amendments that are important to be able to avoid cultivating demagogic approaches that damage the legislative framework itself, damage democracy itself and operate corrosively towards the citizens", he noted in this regard.
"Our goal is none other than for Cyprus to be a pillar of security and stability in a wider unstable region, to support every initiative to de-escalate the crisis in the Middle East and every initiative to be able to come one step closer to the goal of liberation and reunification of our country", he then emphasized.
He added that what is required today is the regaining of citizens' trust in the institutions and organized state bodies because there is no democracy that does not enjoy the trust of society, especially when citizens' mistrust is not expressed in political terms, but in a generalized discredit.
Referring to the Cypriot issue, she said that understanding the expectations, concerns and perspective of the Turkish Cypriot community on developments at home and abroad concerns the essence of the Cyprus problem, especially in the post-solution era, but also the prospects for creating conditions of real peace and unity in our place.
"64 years since the declaration of the Republic of Cyprus, in an extremely difficult political period, with what we have been alarmingly watching for the last twenty-four hours, the only way is liberation and reunification", underlined Mrs. Dimitriou.
At the same time, she expressed her satisfaction for the upcoming meeting between the leaders of the two communities in New York, adding that the consolidation of the real will on the part of the EU will lead one step closer to the goal, which is none other than the agreed framework, the bi-zonal and bi-communal federation with political equality, a step ahead of the Guterres framework and the 6 parameters.
"Time works inexorably against the goal which is none other than ensuring peace, stability and security for Cyprus and all its legal residents. So together we can serve justice, peace, modernize the institutions, realize the seriousness of the moments and realize the responsibility that falls to us and that we should build bridges through dialogue, through argumentation, through from knowledge itself. We are always working, hoping for the best, and I am sure that in the end we will succeed", she concluded.
