We should do everything in our power and insist on the resumption of negotiations, based on the agreed framework for solving the Cyprus problem, the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Dimitriou, said on Monday during her meeting with delegations from the Parliament of Greece and Slovenia, Mayors and Municipal Councilors of the cities twinned with Morphou and the Municipal Council of Morphou, who participated in yesterday's anti-occupation march of the Morphos.
At the meeting held in the House of Representatives, Mrs. Dimitriou said that unfortunately 50 years have already passed since the continued occupation after the Turkish invasion of 1974, stressing that especially with the current developments in the Middle East, it is more imperative to intensify efforts and initiatives to resolve the Cyprus issue.
He noted that we should "demonstrate what is still happening on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus and not only that, but also emphasize the necessity of the prevalence of peace, human rights, security, prosperity", pointing out that the Republic of Cyprus can become a catalyst for stability and perspective especially with what is happening in the region.
The President of the Parliament said that "we will not stop working in this direction and of course insist on restarting the negotiations based on the agreed framework, as recorded in the resolutions of the United Nations Organization, which is the bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality" .
Mrs. Dimitriou added that the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, is going to London today, where he will have a series of contacts on the Cyprus issue, and tomorrow he is going to New York for the informal dinner he will have with Mr. Tatar (p. p. in the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres).
"We hope to have at least the agreement that should exist in order to proceed with the restart of the negotiations from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana," said Mrs. Dimitriou, adding that "even if the omens are not particularly auspicious, we must work and we are doing everything in our power in this direction, so the President of the Republic of Cyprus will have our support".
Mrs. Dimitriou thanked the representatives who participated in the Morfiti anti-occupation march, saying that "your participation is not just formal, it is essential". He explained that their representation and participation also reflects the necessity for legitimacy, European and international law and justice to prevail.
Finally, Mrs. Dimitriou referred to the current geopolitical developments in the Middle East and Ukraine, but also to the need to protect and further strengthen democracy.
