At 10.30 am on Monday, at the residence of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, at Nicosia airport, the two leaders will meet to discuss the opening of new crossing points, following up on what was agreed upon during the informal dinner on October 15, 2024 that the UN Secretary-General hosted in New York for the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar.
The Greek Cypriot side has for some time presented proposals for opening passageways at Pyroi and Kokkina in meetings between the two sides' negotiators with Mr. Stewart. The Turkish Cypriot side has mentioned its position for opening a regular roadblock at Mia Milia.
In his recent report to the UN Security Council on the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP, Antonio Guterres welcomes the commitments made by the two Cypriot leaders on October 15 to explore the possibility of opening new crossing points.
"We are going with full will and a constructive attitude to achieve progress in the meeting," the Government Spokesperson told CNA on Sunday. The necessary preparatory work has been done beforehand, with specific proposals and positions, and we hope that these will be discussed with the same sincere and positive attitude as our own, Konstantinos Letymbiotis added.
On Saturday, an event was held in Pachyammos with a request from residents for the opening of a crossing point in Kokkina, and on Friday, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot organizations held a joint event at the Agios Dometios roadblock with a request for the opening of new crossing points.
