From 07:30 in the morning, the members of POED go to the polls to elect the new leadership of the Organization for the four years 2024-2028.

The polls will remain open – with only a half-hour interruption between 2.30 – 3.00 in the afternoon – until 7.30 this evening, unless there is still a turnout of voters, in which case the relevant Electoral Commission has the right to extend the voting at its discretion.

The Elections (Electoral General Assemblies) are held in the following by District Office Centers:

Nicosia – POED Central Offices

Limassol – Limassol Primary School KA – Kontovatheia

Larnaca – Kamaro Primary School

Paphos - "MONTE LIZA" Center

Famagusta - 3rd Primary School of Paralimni

Morphou - Astromeritis Cultural Center

The maximum number of preference points is, by District Office: Nicosia 9, Limassol 6, Larnaca 4, Paphos 3, Famagusta 2, Morphou 1, Kyrenia 1.

The President of POED, Myria Vassiliou, in her statements to KYPE and when asked about it, said that there is a flow of teachers attending, adding that the elections are being held in a very good atmosphere and the present Board of the Organization invites all 7.100 teachers who make up the electoral body of POED to go to the polls all over Cyprus, highlighting the next leadership of the Organization, who will be called to manage the issues of the education sector in the next four years.

When asked what the process will be after the polls are closed, the President of POED said that the results are expected to come out late at night.

After the counting of the votes, he continued, and the ranking of the four movements in terms of the percentages they will have secured, in the next period of time there will be the procedures at the level of Movements, so as to determine their representatives in the collective bodies of the Organization.

She added, when asked about it, that the first Movement appoints the President, the second Movement the General Secretary, and so on.

The President of POED stated that today is clearly important, a day of celebration of democracy and educational trade unionism, but the day after the elections is certainly also important, during which the new leadership will again be called upon to continue the dynamic claim, to continue, through substantiated argumentation, the promotion of those educational policies that will further help the upgrading of the public school, with a reference point always ensuring the prestige and dignity of the educational sector.

The current leadership of POED remains until the end of June, when the Pan-Cypriot General Conference will now officially determine the new leadership of the Organization.
