On Thursday, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, will visit Lebanon with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in order to discuss ways of providing political and financial support to the country from the EU and the effective management of immigration.
As it has been announced, the President of the Republic and the President of the European Commission, who visited Cyprus on Wednesday for the anniversary event for the 20th anniversary of Cyprus's accession to the EU, will travel together on the morning of May 2, to Beirut, where they will receive an official welcome from the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati.
Their one-on-one tripartite meeting will follow, followed by extended talks by the delegations of the three parties.
Government Spokesman Constantinos Letympiotis has stated in a written statement that the main objective of the visit will be the provision of political and financial support to Lebanon from the EU side, the discussion of addressing the challenges faced by the country as a result of regional developments, the effective management of immigration as well as the implementation of the necessary reforms by Lebanon to promote the country's stability and prosperity.
"The President of the European Commission will present an Economic Support Package for Lebanon, the implementation of which was an initiative of President Christodoulides and the Republic of Cyprus and is practical proof of the active role that the EU can play in the region," he noted.
Statements will then be made to the media.
Afterwards, he says, the President of the Republic and the President of the Commission will go to the Parliament, where they will have a meeting with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nahib Berri.
Later, the President of the Republic and the President of the European Commission will sit at a dinner hosted in their honor by the Prime Minister of Lebanon.
President Christodoulidis, who will be accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Interior, the Government Representative and the Commander of the KYP/SEA will return to Cyprus this afternoon.
