The Plenary of the Parliament is debating, this morning, a proposal by the MPs Kyriakos Hatzigiannis and Nikos Sykas of the DISY and Stavros Papadouris of the Environmental Movement to immobilize, within the next year, the vehicles that are subject to recall due to defective parts.
If the proposal is approved, it is expected that tens of thousands of cars will have to stop driving on the roads of Cyprus because they carry defective Takata airbags, which will not have been replaced. Deputies of the Transport Committee raise the number of vehicles that should be immobilized to eighty thousand.
Based on the proposal, the entry into force of the new legislation is February 2025, XNUMX, and a three-month deadline is given to replace the defective part.
The Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, stated that a proposal is being studied to grant the owners of immobilized vehicles free access to public transport.
The Association of Motor and Electric Vehicle Importers warned that passing the proposal would cause insurmountable problems for companies and would immobilize many cars for a long time.
Among other things, the Association states that the proposal does not provide for a classification of recalls, in order to give priority to those related to car safety problems.
