He rejected in its entirety the proposal of President Christodoulides at the informal dinner in New York for the creation of three tables arguing that this means a comprehensive negotiation, Ersin Tatar reported.
According to Cyprus, the Turkish leader said that the Turkish leader proposed three tables: one on governance issues in the 2+1 format, one on security issues in the 4+1 format, and one on the of guarantees in the form of 5+1. Mr Tatar said he rejected the proposal, saying these issues are the subject of a comprehensive discussion, while the UN secretary general remained silent, he said.
Kypris writes that Mr. Tatar's statements were made on a website television program and he was commenting on reports in the local press about the content of the PtD's proposal.
The Turkish leader reiterated that it has been recorded that there is no common ground between the two sides, stressing that a subsequent meeting should be in the format of 4+1, that is, the UN, the "motherlands" and both sides, so that to answer the question of whether common ground can be found. Outside of this format (4+1) there can be no balance on other tables.
He/she continued, they have a requirement for the United Kingdom to attend the meetings, as the United Kingdom is a guarantor country and has bases in Cyprus. "The Greek Cypriots want Britain to come to the table. But we only agree to sit with the motherland. Perhaps the UK could participate as an observer at ministerial level. We also discussed it with Turkey. We'll see."
Mr. Tatar criticized the fact that the United Nations does not have an impartial stance. "The UN stands by its decisions and deals with the Greek Cypriots and the federal solution model to which we are opposed. When we said yes to the Annan plan, we were promised that the isolation would be lifted, but the Security Council did not even put it on the agenda. The UN has taken a stand, but we are happy with the Secretary-General. I respect him not because he's on our side or anything, but because he's a FG who sees the facts and is fair. Guterres saw first hand what happened in Crans Montana. Only with the presence of Turkey can there be balance at the table. For all these reasons, we accept only one meeting in a 4+1 format."
Regarding the opening of new roadblocks at the meeting, Mr. Tatar said that in this matter a right step was taken in New York and reiterated his position on opening a crossing point for commercial reasons at Mia Milia, which would be beneficial for both sides . He added that the E/K could raise the issue of opening a point in the Luroujina area and said that studies are being done on this point.
