"We are moving forward with the operation of a Technical Gymnasium following the standards of the Sports and Music Gymnasium," said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, on Thursday, adding that the Ministry of Labor in collaboration with the Ministry of Education are working to effectively connect education with the labor market.
In his statements to journalists, attending the ceremony for the 8th National Skills Competition SkillsCyprus 2024, at the State Exhibition, and asked to say what the importance of skills, especially for young people, on the occasion of today's ceremony, the President of the Republic said that "skills affect the competitiveness of the economy, not only of our country, but also of Europe".
President Christodoulidis referred to the recent report of former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on the need for the EU to "run" significantly faster in the area of competitiveness, taking into account the main competitors that are the USA and China.
He noted that the Ministry of Labor in collaboration with the Ministry of Education are working on this issue, the essential connection of education with the labor market.
"That's why we are proceeding - to give you an example - with the operation of a Technical High School following the standards of the Athletic and Music High Schools, which are two successful institutions and it is in this context that I mentioned above," he noted.
He added that within this context special importance is given to the skills sector, to the need to connect education with a system that escapes the need to cover as much material as possible, "and to help through our education our children to develop their skills, to develop critical thinking". And by extension, continued President Christodoulidis, "to connect our education with the labor market in order to deal with the brain drain and to give opportunities to our young people and strengthen the competitiveness of our economy".
"I am here with the Minister of Labor to show in practice, among many other things, that we support these actions, these initiatives, so as to create perspective for our children, to give them the resources that we as a State owe to we will give them and by extension in this context to strengthen the competitiveness of our country, something we have been working for since the first day", concluded President Christodoulidis.
