Last night, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, had a number of telephone communications with the leaders of neighboring states regarding the current developments in the Middle East, as he stated while attending the Nicosia Risk Forum 2024, which is being held at a hotel in Larnaca.
Asked to comment on the developments in the Middle East, the President of the Republic said that in relation to what is happening in Syria, the issue is being monitored very carefully, noting that "I also had a number of phone calls last night with the leaders of neighboring states, in order to deal with this new challenge, which yes, is worrying, not only for the region, but more broadly for Europe."
He added that he will be in Brussels (in the near future) and will have the opportunity to convey some concrete messages about the need for a collective response from the international community.
President Christodoulidis also said that "at the same time, there are countries - without wanting to name any country at this stage - that, if you like, favor this type of negative developments, considering that they will reap any benefits. I consider (s.s. this) a completely wrong approach. This situation is negative for all countries in the region and not only".
Regarding the Nicosia Risk Forum 2024 the President of the Republic stated that "we are here in a forum that proves in practice that despite the problems, challenges, different approaches to issues in the Middle East, we can work together to face common challenges" , noting that "the issues of civil protection, dealing with fires, all these demonstrate the need to cooperate". He indicated that this particular forum proves in practice that despite the problems "we can join forces".
