The need for a smooth political transition in Syria, in accordance with resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council, was emphasized by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, in his post on Platform X. At the same time, he pointed out that the Government is monitoring the evolving situation in the region very closely and with "necessary care".
As he said, "Syria's unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty must be respected" and "a smooth Syrian-led and inclusive political transition, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, is now more more urgent than ever."
International humanitarian law must be respected, he noted, adding that "the peace and security of all Syrians, including minorities, must be ensured."
He also said that Syria's "rich cultural heritage must also be respected and preserved."
Stability in Syria, President Christodoulidis pointed out, will also facilitate decent conditions for the safe return of Syrian refugees. "Developments on the issue are also critical for EU security," he added.
