A bill regulating the registration, operation and control of biomedical and specialized biomedical laboratories was approved by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, announced the Minister of Health Michalis Damianos, noting that it is "a particularly important bill" for the health sector in the country.

As stated in his statements after the session of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Damianos, is "a particularly important bill for the health sector in our country, which for more than 10 years was at the stage of discussion between the agencies and services involved".

"The goal of the bill is clearly none other than ensuring the quality of the Health Services provided to the citizens of our country," he added

The bill, he noted, will regulate the operation of biomedical laboratories and specialized laboratories that provide services of high complexity and that require specialized scientific and technical knowledge.

As the Minister mentioned, through the bill, the necessary infrastructure in places and equipment and the staffing for the optimal operation and ensuring the quality of services to the patient are determined, with the mandatory accreditation of the methods used.

Mr. Damianos noted that the Ministry of Health, as the supervisory authority of the health sector, will be able, through the designated supervisory mechanism, to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the proposed legislation.

He also stated that, in addition to the bill on clinical laboratories, the Cabinet approved a bill regulating the profession of biomedical scientists, "that is, the scientists who staff biomedical laboratories as well as specialized biomedical laboratories, through the establishment of the Board of Registration of Qualified Directors and Biomedical Scientists".

In conclusion, Mr. Damianos addressed an appeal to the House of Representatives to proceed with the passing of the bills that have already been submitted by the Ministry of Health, noting, at the same time, that within the next period of time the Ministry will submit other, very important bills to the Parliament.
