The role of Cyprus in the region, as a bridge to Europe at the crossroads of the Middle East and North Africa, was praised by King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands, during joint statements with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace, on Tuesday, noting that Cyprus understands the problems and issues that arise in this region.
The King of the Netherlands thanked for the invitation to visit Cyprus, which he said, Cyprus is located at a very important point between the Middle East and North Africa and understands the issues concerning the region and its neighbors.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, he said that dialogue is important in order to promote a solution. He also referred to the House of Cooperation in the buffer zone, which he will visit on Wednesday, noting that it is a place where young Cypriots from both sides can see how much they can share.
He also referred to the relations between the Netherlands and Cyprus at the European level.
In his statements, President Christodoulides described the visit of the King of the Netherlands to Cyprus as historic, saying that it is taking place at an important moment.
He referred to the issues discussed during the exploratory talks, such as the economy, defense, rural development, education and culture. The President particularly noted the fact that there are teams from the University of Leiden currently conducting archaeological excavations in Cyprus and the fact that tomorrow the royal couple will visit Choirokitia.
The President thanked the Netherlands for its principled positions regarding the Cyprus issue and said that we are going to Geneva with the aim of creating the conditions for the resumption of talks.
He also mentioned that issues related to Ukraine, the Middle East and immigration were raised in the dialogue they had.
