He is impressed that some people consciously choose to believe the Turkish Cypriot leader and not him, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, today, adding that the trilateral meeting in New York took place in the presence of others.
In statements to journalists, arriving at the meeting of the European Investment Bank in Limassol, and invited to comment on statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tata, that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, did not say that the talks on the Cyprus issue would start from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, the President of the Republic said that “I heard the statements of Mr. Tatar and all those on the Greek Cypriot side who consciously choose to believe Mr. Tatar and not the President of the Republic of Cyprus”.
Fortunately, he added, there were six people at the meeting. “I was not alone, I was accompanied by the Negotiator and the Permanent Representative,” he said.
Asked whether this issue should not have been mentioned in the UN Secretary-General's announcement, the President of the Republic said that "it was a general announcement. I repeat, we were not alone at the meeting and I am impressed, not by what Mr. Tatar says, because I did not expect him to say anything different, but by those on the Greek Cypriot side who choose to believe Mr. Tatar and not the President of the Republic of Cyprus. I repeat, it was a meeting in the presence of others."
Beyond all of this, he said, "the meeting, I believe, taking into account the data, the developments - there is a process in the occupied territories - could not lead to a result."
The President stressed that it is important that the Secretary General, "nevertheless, despite being aware of this fact, proceeded with the organization of this meeting, it shows his political will, he mentioned it in his introductory comments and we expect Ms. Holguin to visit Cyprus after the electoral process, as the Secretary General has told us."
"It was something we also requested, and that he visit both the guarantor powers and Brussels, so that the ground can be prepared for the enlargement before the end of the year, with the sole aim, now, of getting to the essence of the Cyprus problem, which is the resumption of talks," he emphasized.
