The term of service for women in the National Guard will be on a voluntary basis, if and when the relevant proposal, which is in the final stage of processing, is finally completed, said Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas.
Asked by journalists about the matter, on the sidelines of his meeting with Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Defense Celeste Wallander, at the Ministry of Defense, Mr. Palmas said that "with reference to the announcement of the President of the Republic at the recent event for the 60th anniversary of the National Guard concerning the issues of women's voluntary conscription, I want to state that we are in the final stage of processing the proposal for women's voluntary conscription".
He added that "when and if we complete this processing and we will be ready for the proposal that we will submit to the Council of Ministers, but at the same time we will consult, we will be able to say more".
He also stated that the service and conscription will be done - if and when this proposal is finally completed - as it is done for the males who will carry out their service. He emphasized that it will be on a voluntary basis and will range from six to 14 months.
