An EU Ministerial Meeting on Asylum and Migration is taking place today in Ghent, Belgium, during which the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, will analyze the policy implemented by the Republic of Cyprus to strengthen the sector of migrant returns.
According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, during the meeting, which is organized on the sidelines of the Belgian Presidency of the EU, all 27 Ministers responsible for migration issues will discuss the implementation of the Pact on Asylum and Migration, while they will be presented by some of the states best practices of national strategies for migration management.
At the invitation of the organizers, Mr. Ioannou will analyze the policy implemented by the Republic of Cyprus to strengthen the return sector. The Cypriot Minister will refer to the set of measures that were adopted and resulted in an increase in the total number of returns, which ranks Cyprus first, in terms of population, among the member countries of the Union in terms of returns.
It is recalled that in 2023 a 66% increase was recorded in total immigrant returns compared to 2022, while in the first quarter of 2024, the picture remains positive, with 1.000 more departures compared to the corresponding period of 2023.
