Towards the end of the first half of 2025, the disbursement and compensation of "cut" depositors and securities is expected to begin, stated Finance Minister Makis Keravnos, following a meeting, at the Presidential Palace, between President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and members of the Association of Bank Securities Holders (SYKATA).
In statements after the meeting that took place in the morning in the presence, among others, of Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki and Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Mr. Keravnos said that the issue that was discussed was "a matter that has been of concern to the association for so many years and has also been of concern to the Government of Nikos Christodoulides for the last two years."
"As a Government, we had made specific announcements and assumed the responsibility to move forward with a project to compensate both the hedged depositors, as we say, and the hedged bondholders."
He stated that "this undertaking of this initiative is in full swing according to planning and it is expected that towards the end of the first semester, disbursement and compensation for these people who have suffered this terrible suffering will begin."
The Minister thanked the Association for its cooperation with them, as he said, "so that all issues progress at the right pace so that we can have the expected result."
In turn, SYKATA President Stavros Giallouridis said that "finally there is hope" and thanked, on behalf of the Association and the thousands of SYKATA members, the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, the President who has put into practice, as he said, "his pre-election commitments."
"The word commitment has been blatantly abused over the last 12 years and today I believe a bright day has finally begun," he added.
Mr. Giallouridis said that "finally, after 13 years, we are in the happy position of hoping for redress for this great injustice that was done to us" and added that "the first step has finally been taken."
He stated that "this time, this Government of Nikos Christodoulides has finally seen the issue in its true dimension and the disbursement of compensation to the legal beneficiaries, to those who sacrificed themselves in 2012 and 2013 to save the state, is finally beginning."
"We have a marathon to run, but this journey has finally begun," he said, adding that for 13 years in the streets and squares we have reacted, resisted, and a handful of people have shown a society that unfortunately only takes to the streets during carnivals or for football issues that we have hope when we resist and when we demand our justice," he added.
Finally, the President of SYKATA thanked "the 300 fighters who were by our side from the first day we started this fight."
