The Government reiterates its commitment to addressing the housing problem, which concerns a portion of our fellow citizens, especially young people and young families, through the Ministry of Interior, which emphasizes that their planning is in full swing and all the possibilities offered to strengthen the effort with European funds and financing are being utilized.
In its statement today, on the occasion of the reports by MEP Michalis Hadjipantelas and NEDISY, to secure European funding for the implementation of housing programs, the Ministry of the Interior states that it will agree with NEDISY's report that "housing cannot be solved with magic wands", hence, as it notes, "every public statement must be well-considered and the creation of false impressions and excessive expectations must be avoided."
According to the Ministry of Interior, "the EIB has already financed the construction of student dormitories of the University of Cyprus and the Technical and Vocational Training Institute with a total amount of approximately €120 million and in the event that there is a new request for an additional student dormitory project and given that the project falls within the conditions set by the Banks, the Government, through the competent Ministries, is in communication with the EIB and the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEDB) and is proceeding with the established procedures to secure financing."
Moreover, in relation to the reports on funding to KOAG for the production of affordable housing, it states that last February the Minister of Interior had a meeting with the Deputy Governor for the group of TASE target countries, with whom the comprehensive housing policy that the Government has been implementing since 2023 and which focuses on increasing affordable housing options and enhancing access to them for socio-economically vulnerable groups of the population was discussed in detail.
The Ministry of Interior reports that the meeting explained the new upgraded role of KOAG as the executive arm of the State's housing policy.
At the same time, he notes that possible funding of the Organization by the CCA for the implementation of affordable housing programs was discussed, and in this context and with a view to exploring ways and areas of cooperation for the implementation of projects with benefits for Cypriot society, the Ministry of Interior has since been in regular contact with the CCA, as agreed in the meeting between the Minister of Interior and the Deputy Governor of the Bank.
