The Police recommend special caution to the public, following a number of reports it has received from citizens regarding fraud by individuals falsely posing as government officials and aiming to steal money from bank accounts.
Specifically, the perpetrators, through phone calls from mobile and landline numbers, communicate with citizens and falsely present themselves as officials of government services, such as the Social Insurance Services and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, instructing citizens to reveal details of their bank accounts and bank cards and to take certain actions, such as confirming transactions, with the aim of extracting money from them through their bank cards.
The public is urged to be particularly cautious and take the following protective measures:
To NOT respond to the calls and instructions received from the perpetrators
Not to disclose to other persons sensitive information such as passwords, usernames and PINs, identity details and bank card and account details.
Citizens can verify the identity of the individuals calling them by contacting them through the official channels of the Services that these individuals claim to represent.
