1535: French explorer Jacques Cartier discovers Montreal in Quebec.
1540: The French-mediated treaty of peace in Venice, which ends the third Venetian-Turkish war, is signed. With the treaty, Venice is forced to leave at the mercy of the Turks the Northern Sporades, Astypalea, Aegina, Nafplio and Monemvasia.
1828: The French Expeditionary Force expels Ibrahim's last Turkish-Egyptian troops from the Peloponnese.
1836: Charles Darwin returns to England after a five-year journey in search of evidence that helped him formulate the theory of natural selection.
1912: The Cretan deputies are accepted by the Greek Parliament, after many months of effort to participate in its work, in order to accelerate the union of the island with Greece.
1914: Spyros Spyromilios declares the autonomy of the Northern Epirus.
1919: The French Parliament ratifies the Treaty of Versailles.
1924: The Geneva Protocol, which strengthened the League of Nations, is adopted.
1941: The siege of Moscow by the Germans begins, known by the code name "Operation Hurricane", or better known as Operation Barbarossa.

1967: In Greece, six years of compulsory education and two levels of education are introduced. The purgatory is also established as a language instrument in education.
1968: The massacre of Tlatelolko. Ten days before the opening ceremony of the Mexican Olympic Games, 10.000 people are protesting against the Games. During the incidents with the Police and the Army, 260 people were killed and 1200 were injured.
1972: Denmark approves in a referendum (65,5% in favor) its accession to the EEC.
1988: The 24th Olympic Games are coming to an end in Seoul.
1990: Former PASOK minister Agamemnon Koutsogiorgas is in custody, accused of the Koskotas scandal.
1997: The "Treaty of Amsterdam" is signed. This is the new successor to Maastricht for European integration.
2001: The Swiss airline Swissair goes bankrupt. Its management requests the immediate granting of an emergency financial assistance package, in order to ensure its viability.
2002: Demis Nikolaidis, with 26 goals, becomes the top scorer for a Greek team in the European Cups, surpassing Dimitris Saravakos (24 goals) with the goal he scores in AEK-Real Madrid (3-3) for the Champions League groups. At the same time, a record, 80 million contract was signed with EMI by the British star of the song, Robbie Williams.
2003: The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to South African author John Maxwell Kuchi.
