Shocking are the testimonies of residents of Neos Voutzas, who not only saw their property and homes lost in the flames, but also saw people dying in front of their eyes, as they tried to escape the chasing fire.
People who survived death at the last minute, many of them elderly, describe the hours of agony they lived through. Mothers ran to the beach with their children in their arms, trying to find shelter from the flames.
Some did, some did not. Characteristic is the testimony of a woman resident of the area, who heard a little girl shouting "help"! He turned around and saw the girl burn all over and dive from a 15 meter rock to be saved! Unfortunately, he did not succeed. With the smoke covering the sky and the visibility being limited, she lost her life as she "exploded" on the rocks.
Another woman, a mother of two, just three and six years old, hugged them as they were, with their panties and slippers, and took them out of their house as she watched the flames approach menacingly. Barefoot, she ran on the burning ground, with her little ones in her arms and her legs burning, while everything around them turned to ashes. She managed to reach the sea and wet her feet, holding her minor children tightly, so that they would not fall into the water.
Hundreds of people descended on the harbor, waiting for hours for help. Nobody went to pick them up and, when they arrived at the Coast Guard, as they complain, at 2 at night, it was already late…
