A British man arrested in Cyprus has pleaded guilty to involvement in an alleged global piracy ring that aired unreleased movies and TV shows on the internet.
According to Reuters, 52-year-old George Bridi was facing charges of copyright infringement. The case was heard in a court in Manhattan, USA.
He admitted at the hearing that he was "a little nervous", but when asked by the judge if he pleaded guilty to the charges, he replied clearly: "Yes".
According to the same publication, the 52-year-old's activity cost the studios tens of millions of dollars in a decade with the leak of movies and TV shows before their scheduled release dates.
Prosecutors said the company he worked for managed to obtain copies of the DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, using various tricks.
He then used computers to bypass the copyright protection of the disks and recoded them so that they could be easily shared online.
Bridi, who has lived in Britain, was arrested in Cyprus in August 2020 and extradited a year later.
He could face up to two years in prison.
