The main reason for the existence of peace in Cyprus since 1974 is the fact that the sides live in their own area and the presence of the Turkish army, Ersin Tatar claimed, according to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper "Kipris", also saying that an agreement in which the "sovereign rights" of the Turkish Cypriots are not accepted will never be accepted.
As reported by the Press and Information Office, speaking during a meeting with students of the political science faculty of the "American University of Kyrenia" (GAÜ), Mr. Tatar said that the sectors of the pseudo-state's economy are developing and the level of prosperity is increasing daily, and he made special mention of the contribution of the water transferred from Turkey to the occupied territories.
He also said that the Turkish Cypriots are fighting for their "sovereignty" but the international community is not "treating them fairly" because - as he argued - it accepts the Greek Cypriots as interlocutors on behalf of the entire island, claiming that Turkey is in Cyprus as a guarantor power to protect the Turkish Cypriots and that history will repeat itself if lessons are not learned from it and the necessary measures are not taken.
Referring to the meeting in Geneva next month, he said that the Turkish Cypriot side will never accept an agreement in which the "sovereign rights" of the Turkish Cypriots are not recognized and will not enter a negotiation process under pressure.
After saying that it is important for the two sides to work towards cooperation, Ersin Tatar mentioned that cooperation is needed especially in areas such as potential natural disasters, judicial issues and cultural heritage.
Referring to the "universities" in the occupied territories, he said that students from 144 countries study in them, who have the opportunity to share their own values in an environment in which different cultures coexist and to learn new cultures.
