It takes just 49 minutes and 47 seconds for the young passengers to start being hit and anxiously asking their parents how much time it still takes to complete their flight. That's why Emirates joined forces with Dr. Sandi Mann, a psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire specializing in boredom, seeks to find a solution to this problem.

Dr. Mann has teamed up with the world's largest airline to co-create the Child Boredom Quotient (CBQ), which will help parents understand exactly when their children will start being hit during the trip.

The sample of the study concerns more than 2.000 parents in Great Britain, with children under 12 years old, while during the data collection process Dr. Mann divided the proposed anti-boredom activities into four categories to shape the CBQ: Active (A), Passive (P), Interactive (I), Creative (C), and Sensory (S). In this way, parents can make the best combination to fight boredom before even the little passengers feel it.

The findings of the study showed that children 3-4 years old are the most lively during a flight. At the same time, 64% of parents are concerned about the entertainment provided to their children during the trip, while 43% are concerned about whether their children are bothering other passengers.

When it comes to tackling the issue, one of the most popular tactics to calm young travelers is. Bribery. 41% of parents prefer to offer their children a snack in exchange for a good behavior, while with 33% the second most popular tactic is the electronic devices that distract young passengers. 27% of parents choose to give new toys in flight, while 16% prefer to let young travelers run to the airport to get tired. However, there is a 7% who state that they do not enter the process of giving some "reward" to the children, but just try to rest through sleep, hoping that they will do the same.

"Parents who have children 3-4 years old will begin to understand that at this age their children become even more active and seek even more independence. That is why different ways of dealing with the problem are required, with even smarter methods ", emphasizes Dr. Mann adds: "For example, electronic babysitter while effective during a flight may not be suitable for all age groups. Older children need more intense activities so that they do not get hurt. "

In terms of activities that are usually chosen, movies are the first choice for most, as they keep children 40-0 years old busy for 2 minutes and children 105-11 years old for 12 minutes. In second place are the games (either on smartphones and tablets, or in the entertainment system of Emirates), which keep children busy for 30 '(the newest) and for 90' (the oldest). Among these creative activities that stand out are sketches, with puzzles and sketches constantly gaining ground at the age of up to 9 years, while painting and sticker books are more popular at younger ages.

"Very young children do not need such specialized activities for an air trip, they are satisfied with the stimuli from the environment like the other passengers and obviously their parents. For example, frequent walks in the hallway are appropriate solutions, as are the songs sung by their companions. Older children are content with simple objects and materials, such as a notebook, a notebook, pencils, puzzles and comics. The important thing is for parents to understand that their children should take breaks from their activities and take walks on the plane. For their part, parents should not just stare at them as if they were sitting on the couch at home. And they certainly should not be afraid to let their children do what they want, even if they get bored for a while. This is normal and they will find a way to overcome it on their own ", concludes Dr. Mann.

For their part, flight attendants understand that it is not a tempting idea "for parents to travel for several hours with their children affected", but "they do not have to wait for this to happen", as Jade emphasizes Cobbs. "Families can avoid boredom either by watching movies on the Emirates ICE program or TV series that are suitable for families. And there are definitely the activities we have prepared as well as the interactive games that entertain and entertain the little passengers ", adds the cabin supervisor of Emirates.

Dr. Mann and Emirates categorized all of the above activities as follows:

Liabilities: movies, music

Active: treadmill, card game

Creative: sketches, painting

Sensors: physical refreshment

Interactive: dialogue, reading books by parents

About research
The survey was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Emirates in June 2017. The data were collected through online questionnaires and the sample was 2.006 British parents with children aged 0-12 years. To create the Child Boredom Quotient, Dr. Sandi Mann monitored the behavior of 90 children (6 months-11 years old) during their play.
