Ayia Napa: "War" for watersports - Ball of responsibilities

It seems that the implementation of the "letter of the law" in the port of Ayia Napa will bring headaches and troubles. The Municipality of Ayia Napa, following the foreseen procedures, announced an open tender for the issuance of a license for facilities (water sports).

The Municipality secured the offer to the company that met the criteria and a contract of 60 thousand was signed. There is a company existing in the area in recent years, the owner of which does not allow the licensee to settle and does not leave the area, under the pretext that he has been there in recent years.

The SigmaLive contacted the Mayor of Ayia Napa who confirmed the fact, even sounding the alarm to those who do not take the necessary measures. Asked to comment on the lack of security in the area (due to the fact that the existing businessman is harassing the licensee's boats) Mr. Karousos stressed that the one who will not take his measures will be responsible if something happens.

The issue now concerns the District Administration, stressed Mr. Karousos. City Hall is taking all necessary measures to safeguard the public interest, he said. City Hall noted it has sent a letter to the District Administration.

The Mayor noted that there is an illegal and a legal licensee in the area. The City Hall requested the contribution of the Port Police, said Mr. Karousos, without, however, taking the necessary measures.

"We will do our best to safeguard the public interest. It is our duty as a municipality ", said Mr. Karousos.

For its part, the Port Police stated succinctly that a complaint was made about the specific case in the port. Asked whether further measures should be taken in the area, since the dispute causes, as the licensed businessman complains, damage to boats and obstruction of work, the Coast Guard said that nothing further can be done, from the complaint.

The issue was noted by the Coast Guard, it concerns City Hall and District Administration.

The Prefect on his part, called by SigmaLive to comment on what is attributed to the District Administration stated that he received the letter from City Hall and immediately sent a handwritten letter to the owner who has not secured a permit, to leave the site.

"It is not the responsibility of the District Administration but of the City Hall, which for so many years also secured money from the permits given to them by the owner in question", stressed the Prefect. A letter has also been sent to the Attorney General in order to inform the District Administration of its legitimacy to be involved in such matters concerning local government.
