Yesterday was spent on the issue of Belarus, with the result that the debate will take place today
The issue of Turkey and the Turkish Challenges were not finally discussed at yesterday's informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, with the discussion finally taking place this morning.
The debate on Turkey, according to sources from the Foreign Ministry, did not take place as yesterday's session was spent beyond the allotted time on the issue of Belarus.
Yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulidis, called on his EU counterparts to defend the principles and values of the Union, against the illegal and provocative actions of Turkey against two Member States and the interests of the Union itself in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In fact, he pointed out that Europe's credibility is at stake, pointing out that the EU solidarity must be real and substantial with the Cypriot and Greek sides waiting for concrete decisions during today's meeting. At today's meeting, Josep Borel, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, is expected to present a list of possible sanctions against Turkey.
It is noted, however, that information from Berlin indicates that the European Foreign Ministers are oriented towards the adoption of a list of sanctions that will be stricter than the measures that have been taken so far.
The same information indicates that a decision will be taken to impose new financial sanctions and the Commission services will be instructed to compile the list. The list will then be approved by European leaders on September 24th and 25th at the Eastern Mediterranean Special Session.
