Why should you not walk barefoot by the pool or sleep with wet hair? A Mississippi-based dermatologist reveals the 4 things she would never do in the summer, and why.

You belong to those who love to walk barefoot by the pool or the best to wear flip flops all day. And yet, if you listen to the video below, you will understand that it is not the best idea.

Mississippi-based dermatologist Dr. Lindsay Zubritsky shares in an Instagram video the four things she would never do in the summer, and explains why.

4 things you should never do in summer, according to a dermatologist

Walk barefoot by the pool

"You can judge me all you want, but I've seen quite a few feet of people walking all summer by the pool," he says in the video, and continues: "Damp, wet environments like the pool, public showers, saunas, these harbor fungus in the ground and it is extremely easy to stick to them. That's why I always wear flip-flops."

In fact, her words are confirmed by a recent study from Poland, which found that swimmers are at high risk of fungal infections. At the same time, the constant use of flip-flops can increase the risk of heel pain and sprained ankles due to the lack of support and absorption.

Use citrus fruits on your hair

The dermatologist advises against squeezing lemon or lime on your hair in an attempt to lighten it – better to save the fruit for your cocktails.

"Citrus can interact with UV light, leading to a phototoxic reaction called ... phytophotodermatitis, a severe blistering reaction that leaves this irregular pattern on your skin from wherever the juice touched your skin," he explained. "Once the blister is gone it can leave behind hyperpigmentation, which can last for months."

Run the razor over the ants

Be very careful when shaving your legs to show them off in short shorts – especially if you have warts.

"Warts are contagious, which means if you run a razor over them, you could transfer the virus all over your leg," said the dermatologist. "This is especially true if you have these tiny, almost invisible flat nits, and the more you have, the harder it is to get rid of them."

Sleep with wet hair

"I always blow dry my hair before I go to bed," says Zubritsky. "Sleeping with wet hair creates a moist environment, which can be a breeding ground for things like bacteria and fungus, leading to diseases like conjunctivitis or triggering conditions like seborrheic dermatitis."

Tinea capitis is ringworm of the scalp, while seborrheic dermatitis can cause scaly patches on the scalp.
