According to science, there are a few things you can do during a flight to help your digestive system work better.

It's no secret that boarding a plane can cause various effects on your body. Low atmospheric pressure, cold temperatures and reduced oxygen levels can take a physical toll, not to mention the effect of general stress and sleep disruption caused by travel.

But what happens to your digestion when you travel? Cabin pressure is what usually affects our digestion the most when we fly. Many travelers, for example, experience bloat when they're on a plane.

Food and airplane food in general tends to be highly processed and low in nutritional value. So in-flight meals have less fiber and more sugar, salt and preservatives, which can also cause digestive problems.

According to science, there are a few things you can do to help your digestive system work better. It is important to increase your water intake to begin with, as any time you are in the air, your body is at risk of dehydration.

Likewise, it would be good to avoid foods and drinks that will dehydrate your body. Alcohol, for example, is not the best ally in this case. If you want to drink alcohol, choose a simple Bloody Mary, since tomato juice is a source of electrolytes, but also rich in antioxidants.

Coffee, in addition to being dehydrating, can also be harmful to nervous travelers, so it's best to avoid it. Instead, try a hot chocolate, a matcha latte with almond milk, an herbal tea, or a decaffeinated version of your favorite hot beverage.

Avoiding salty foods is also recommended. Too much salt can worsen dehydration, which can cause headaches or fatigue. Therefore, it is best to choose snacks without added salt and avoid meals with salt before and during the flight.
