The image of a bloodied and abused Ukrainian woman has become an early symbol of political pain during the initial Russian invasion.
The injured woman appears as airstrikes destroyed an apartment complex outside Kharkov, Ukraine, on February 24. The attack began in the early hours of the morning after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a "special military operation".
The photo, taken by Anadolu Images' Wolfgang Swan, shows a woman outside a bombed-out apartment complex near Kharkiv, Ukraine. Swan said the woman was injured when Russian forces destroyed the group in an airstrike, according to a newsweek.com post.
Images and references have been felt around the world. Posted in Reddit's "interestingasf ** k" forum by 2DeadMoose, the photo of the injured woman has more than 102.000 positive votes and more than 3.500 comments. A Reddit poster reported that they feared for their family in Ukraine, unaware of what could be done to help them in this time of turmoil. The poster described the feeling of being "helpless" in a world that is not normal from 2020.
In the early hours of Thursday, February 24, Russia launched a military operation after the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk called for help in dealing with Ukrainian government forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the operation is aimed at Ukraine's military infrastructure and that the civilian population is not in danger.
