The Ministry of Defense organized yesterday, Friday, March 30, an anniversary event at the municipal building of the Municipality of Sotira for the celebration of 1th April, during which the families of the fallen fighters of the city and province of Famagusta were honored.
The main speaker at the event was the Minister of Defense, Mr. Savvas Angelidis, who stressed that "we feel awe, because we are surrounded by people who have exceeded human limits. People who with their courage and valor raised not only themselves, but the entire Cypriot Hellenism. We are also proud because they are our heroes. "People who at the critical moment did not obey the laws of supposed logic and probability and walked the path that their soul presented to them".
He went on to praise the magnitude of their sacrifice and stressed that "after drinking the wine of the immortals, they live forever in us. They became part of our soul, quintessence of our life, they became golden chapters of our history, of the history of our nation. The history that writes that the EOKA Struggle was given with the main weapons the love for the homeland and the high ideals of freedom, democracy, humanity and justice ".
The Minister closed his speech with the message that "what our heroes ask and expect is to look worthy of them. Let us, in turn, show a sense of duty, a sense of responsibility towards the homeland and the common good. Elements necessary for every people who want to survive and move forward. "
Honorary plaques were awarded to 38 families of fallen fighters.
The President of the EOKA Fighters Association 1955-59, Mr. Thassos Sophocleous, also addressed the event.
The event ended with anniversary songs by the Military Music of the National Guard (SMEF).
