Robots that help with household chores are the ambitious new design of the British Dyson, best known for its vacuum cleaners, fanless fans and ultrasonic hand dryers.
The company has announced plans to set up a robotics center at Wiltshire Laboratories, which will employ 250 robotics specialists.
Dyson, which was founded in Britain but has moved its headquarters to Singapore, said half of the 2.000 workers hired this year were engineers, scientists or programmers. The company also hires specialists in mechanical vision, machine learning and sensors.
Dyson gave a first look at its designs in a video shown at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Philadelphia.
It shows robotic arms grabbing dishes, moving a bottle of detergent and lifting a plush toy off the floor.
It remains to be seen whether the expansion to home robots will give the company new perspectives or end in failure, as happened in 2019 with the cancellation of plans for electric cars.
Dyson recently launched headphones with built-in air purifier (Dyson)
Most recently it introduced headphones with a built-in air purifying mask, which received mediocre reviews and was described as too bizarre by Internet users.
