US Ambassador: "Respect for Famagusta Resolutions"

The need to respect the UN Security Council resolutions on the issue of Famagusta was underlined by the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Judith Garber, who also reaffirmed the US support for the right of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit its natural resources.

According to a parliamentary statement, Ms. Garber, who was received today by Parliament Speaker Adamo Adamou, stressed that the US position is clear, both on the Cyprus problem and on Turkish activities within the Cypriot side. EEZ and underlined the firm position of its country's authorities in favor of a comprehensive settlement for the reunification of Cyprus, on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, which will be beneficial for all Cypriots, but also for peace and stability in the wider region.

For his part, the Speaker of Parliament thanked Ms. Garber for the support provided by the United States to Cyprus, especially in light of the very worrying developments, as he pointed out, in relation to Turkey's illegal actions against the Cyprus issue. Democracy, but also beyond.

Mr. Adamou stigmatized the escalating Turkish provocations and the divisive positions put forward by the Turkish side regarding the Cyprus problem, making special reference to the opening of part of the fenced area of ​​Famagusta, in violation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The Speaker of Parliament also stigmatized the ongoing illegal Turkish activities within the Cyprus EEZ and the destabilizing role of Turkey in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region and beyond.

Moreover, as mentioned, during the meeting, the upgrade of the relations and the cooperation between the USA and Cyprus in various sectors and levels was noted from both sides, with the American Ambassador emphasizing that these relations have never been stronger. Possible ways to further strengthen relations and cooperation were discussed, especially in the parliamentary context.
