"Famagusta, the soul and the course of a kingdom"

The city of Famagusta and its course through the centuries, are the subject of the photography exhibition of the Cypriot photographer Petros Fiakkas, in collaboration with the Cyprus Center in Athens under the auspices of the Embassy-House of Cyprus and the Municipality of Famagusta.

The exhibition will include material from the ancient city of Salamis, the medieval castle of Kantara, the monastery of the Apostle Barnabas (founder of the Church of Cyprus), the medieval city of Famagusta to the barbed wire of the new fenced city.

This is a photographic work with the course of Famagusta through a rich visual archive with special aspects and images, which have not been forgotten over time.

Famagusta is the continuation of Salamis, perhaps the most important kingdom of Cyprus in antiquity. In Salamis, the Apostle Barnabas taught Christianity and Byzantium made it its capital, renaming Constantia. Famagusta (Famagusta) was built further south after the destruction of Salamis, the glorious city of the Franks and Venetians with its great walls, temples and palaces, the city that European merchants and merchants of Jerusalem emerged as the 'richest of cities' until its occupation by the Ottomans in 1571. The expelled Greeks built the new city of Famagusta that today we see fenced from afar.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on November 11, 2017 at 19:30, at the premises of neighborhood associations in Athens, the "Cyprus Home" (Kekropos 3, Plaka) and will be open to the public until November 15.

Representatives of the Cypriot Embassy and the Municipality of Famagusta, the archaeologist / historian Anna Marangou from Famagusta and members of organizations of Cypriot Associations and groups of Famagusta of Athens and Cyprus will address a greeting.

In the following days of the exhibition, there will be a student educational program on the title of the exhibition, which will begin at school interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary and will end at the exhibition with interactive activities of exhibits (photography) and the public (students).
