Famagusta Municipality to Stewart: "The return of Famagusta will be beneficial for the whole of Cyprus"

The position that the return and opening of Famagusta will be beneficial for the whole of Cyprus and all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, was conveyed by a delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta in a meeting held on Friday 18 March with the Special Representative of the Secretary General and head of UNFICYP Colin Stewart, according to an announcement by the Municipality.

As it is mentioned, the delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta headed by the Mayor Simos Ioannou, after delivering a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Stewart the developments regarding Famagusta and especially the as well as the expected role of the United Nations.

The return of the enclosed city to its rightful owners, the opening of the port and the reconstruction of the city will become major historical milestones and cuts in the modern course of the island, said, according to the announcement, the delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta, adding that it will be a first big bet for the cooperation and coexistence of the two communities.

For his part, Mr. Stewart reiterated the commitment of the United Nations in relation to the resolutions concerning Famagusta and informed the delegation of the Municipality that his service is closely following the current developments, while, as noted, he clearly stressed that the goal of The return of Famagusta to the United Nations, which is sealed by the binding resolutions of the Security Council, but also the resumption of talks to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Finally, the announcement states that his service will be in contact with the Municipality of Famagusta in case there are any developments on the issue of Famagusta and that the United Nations is closely monitoring the issue.
