Anastasiadis' letter to the UN Secretary General on Famagusta

At the same time that the open informal Anastasiadis-Akinci meeting on August 9 is locked, the Turkish Cypriot side does not seem willing to abandon the intrigues in the enclosed city of Famagusta, something that the so-called Foreign Minister admitted to the pseudo-foreign minister. His interview was hosted by the newspaper "Simerini" on Sunday.

Nevertheless, the clear position of the Greek Cypriot side can be seen in the letter sent on June 26 by President Anastasiadis to Antonio Guterres, which Sigma reveals tonight. In the letter, the President of the Republic denounces the actions of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership, referring to the implementation of "Plan B", one of the main goals of which was the opening of the city under Turkish administration.

"Although recent statements refer to the start of an inventory study, it is clear that the whole issue falls under Turkey's" Plan B "for resettlement in the enclosed city of Varosia, under military command. It is equally clear that such plans run counter to the provisions of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, "the letter said.

Elsewhere in his letter, the President of the Republic restores the proposal for Famagusta, as he put it in writing to Mustafa Akinci in all four points.

1. Establishment of a Technical Committee for Reconstruction and Re-installation of an enclosed area of Famagusta.

2. Allow foreign and Cypriot experts, including Greek Cypriots, to conduct technical studies for reconstruction.

3. To apply to the EU. to fund the studies and to call on the United Nations to assist in the technical work.

4. Ensuring complete demilitarization of the area.

For their part, the people of Famagusta express their surprise at what Kundret Ozersai claimed in his interview about the shipwreck of the Batten Initiative in 2014 due to the fault of the Greek Cypriot side and its alleged refusal to accept the conquerors' assessment.
"The information we had as the Municipality of Famagusta from the Greek Cypriot side, led by the Government, is that the Turkish Cypriot side had vetoed the participation of Greek Cypriot experts in the group that will enter to study the situation in the city," said Chrysanthomodhou Amanthos Zannetos.

The Government also gave a clear statement on the shipwreck of the Batten initiative through a Government Spokesman.

"Unfortunately, then, the initiative had run counter to the fact that the Turkish side had raised the issue of the illegal airport in Tybou and at the same time raised the issue of direct trade to open direct trade, giving the occupied territories a separate entity," he said.

The Government Spokesman also clarified that any agreement on Famagusta must be in line with the decisions and resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
