Strong Blinken intervention for Varosya: Turkish actions provocative and unacceptable

With a public statement by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken himself, the US government reacted to yesterday's announcements by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan about Varos. In a written statement issued last night, Anthony Blinken stressed that the United States condemned the statement made by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the transfer of parts of the Varokos to Yarrow.

"This move is clearly incompatible with United Nations Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789, which explicitly call for Varos to be administered by the United Nations. Since October 2020, when the Turkish Cypriots, with the support of Turkey, announced the opening of the Varosia beach and began to take action to implement this decision, Turkish Cypriots and Turkey have ignored the calls of the international community and its Security Council. "The United States considers the Turkish Cypriot actions in Varosia, with the support of Turkey, to be settlement talks.

"We urge the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey to reverse their decision announced today and all the measures taken since October 2020," the US diplomat said, adding that the United States was working with similar partners "to refer to it." the situation in the UN Security Council and will provoke a strong reaction ".

Concluding, Anthony Blinken underlines the importance of avoiding provocative unilateral actions that increase tensions on the island and hinder efforts to resume talks on resolving the Cyprus issue, in line with UN Security Council resolutions.

"We remain supporters of a Cypriot leadership in a comprehensive settlement for the reunification of the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation for the benefit of all Cypriots and the wider region," the US Secretary of State added.
